(Algo)Ritmi di danza

La danza e l’arte generativa per la promozione della Riviera Apuana

Interactive Dance | 2019

Generative storytelling, Interactive Installation

(Algo)Ritmi di Danza is an interactive work of art, a human-computer interaction project in which the user experience is not only contemplative, but it also interacts with the visual content. Created as part of the CultureMoves project (co-funded by Connecting Europe Facility program), on the occasion of Internet Fesival 2019, it tells the story of the territory of the Apuan Riviera, proposing generative storytelling created through the re-use of archive contents.

Why we did it?

Thanks to generative art, users and spectators enter into a relationship with the digital contents of the work and, with their movements, they modify it, giving life to constant and always new artistic forms. The video installation will also be enlivened by dancers who, to the rhythm of music, will transform it into a live performance in which dance, technology and storytelling blend together to create an emotional and innovative work of art.

How we did it?

Starting from the production of an image, generated by the t-SNE algorithm which organizes thousands of pictures according to their similarities, we tried to present the characteristics of the Apuan lands.

Thousands of archive pictures

The digital contents used to create it were kindly made available by the EX APT photographic archive – Provincial Archive of Massa-Carrara and by the historical archive of the Marble Railway – Municipality of Carrara. Part of the content comes from the Europeana digital platform.

The details of the territory

The installation presents the territory of the Apuan Riviera, proposing a generative storytelling made through the reuse of video and photographic archive content elaborated by a computational algorithms.

Generative particles system

The visualizations are generated by a computer vision algorithm. The user interaction, using a depth sensor camera, creates a particles system through its movement, generating every time different configurations.

Three dancers

Using an engaging soundtrack specifically designed for the installation, three dancers  interpret the morphology of the Apuan territory through the artistic expression of dance.
